Water sprite (Ceratopteris thalictroides) is one of the easiest and most versatile aquarium plants. It grows quickly, absorbs excess nitrates, and provides excellent cover for fry, shrimp, and shy fish. It can be planted in substrate or left floating at the surface.
Thrives under almost any light level. Under high light it grows rapidly and will need frequent trimming. Floating water sprite shades the tank below, which can help reduce algae and make shy fish feel secure. Planted in substrate, it develops a root system and grows upright as a bushy stem plant.
Water sprite produces small plantlets along the edges of its leaves. These detach on their own or can be gently pulled off once they have a few roots. Float or plant the new sprigs — they establish quickly. In good conditions a single plant can fill a tank within weeks.
