Medaka (Oryzias latipes) are small, hardy ricefish native to East Asia. They tolerate a remarkably wide range of temperatures and water conditions, making them ideal for beginners and outdoor tub setups alike. Keep in groups of 6 or more.
A planted tank or outdoor container works great. They prefer calm or low-flow water. Floating plants like water sprite provide cover and encourage natural behavior. They do well without a heater in most climates and can handle temperatures down into the low 60s.
Medaka are not picky eaters. Crushed flake food is a good staple. Supplement with baby brine shrimp, daphnia, or micro worms for conditioning and fry growth. Feed small amounts twice daily.
Medaka breed readily in warm conditions (above 72°F) with extended daylight. Females carry clusters of eggs on their belly before depositing them on plants or spawning mops. Collect eggs daily if you want to maximize fry survival, as adults will eat them.
Place eggs in a small container with clean tank water or dechlorinated water. Keep at 75-80°F for fastest development. A drop of methylene blue helps prevent fungus. Eggs typically hatch in 7-14 days depending on temperature. Remove any eggs that turn white (infertile or fungused). Once hatched, fry are free-swimming but may not eat on the first day as they absorb their yolk sac. After that, feed powdered fry food, spirulina powder, infusoria, or vinegar eels.
