Bristlenose Pleco Care Guide

Overview

Bristlenose plecos (Ancistrus sp.) are one of the most popular and easiest plecos to keep in a home aquarium. They stay small compared to common plecos and are excellent algae eaters. Hardy and adaptable to a wide range of water conditions.

Tank Setup

Provide driftwood — bristlenose plecos rasp on wood as part of their diet and use it for hiding. Caves or PVC tubes make good shelter and are essential if you want them to breed. Low to moderate lighting is preferred. A gentle current from a sponge filter or HOB works well.

Feeding

While they graze on algae, bristlenose plecos need supplemental feeding. Offer blanched zucchini, cucumber, or squash a few times per week. Repashy gel foods and sinking catfish pellets round out their diet. Remove uneaten vegetables after 24 hours to avoid fouling the water.

Breeding

Males develop bristles on the snout and are the primary caregivers. Provide a cave just large enough for the male to wedge into. The male guards the eggs and fans them until they hatch (4-10 days depending on temperature). Fry can be fed crushed algae wafers or Repashy once their yolk sac absorbs.
